Chapter Four
Ville jumped out of the carriage before it had even come to a halt. His eyes searched the courtyard as everyone stared at him. A woman broke through the crowd and rushed to him, and after a moment, Ville recognized Helen. She still had beautiful blue eyes, but today they had dark circles beneath them. Her white-blonde hair now reached well past her waist. A pink smudge on her face told him she’d been crying blood tears, and he cringed at how changed she seemed. Despite having changed his mind, slightly, after thinking over Ettore’s words, he still wished he’d killed David years ago when he saw the grief on her face.
She reached out and took both of his hands before he could speak. “Thank you for coming. I never dared hope you’d come so quickly.”
“I couldn’t get here quickly enough,” Ville said. “I’m at your service until this is over, and I’m so sorry for the loss of your child.” He pulled out the note Ettore’s page had given him as he was leaving. “And Ettore sends his condolences. I daresay he’ll follow soon.” He chose not to say anything about Braden, though he felt sure his mate would insist on coming as well.
She nodded slightly as she took the note and held it to her breast. “Thank you. My son, Andrew, has the garment. I sent a servant to get him when I saw Ettore’s crest on the carriage. I gave the king’s men my best guess, but—”
“Mother, why is one of those things here?” a voice said behind them, the tone unmistakably venomous. “We just got rid of the last one.”
Ville turned and saw a man who looked remarkably like David, his hair cut in the same style and exactly the right shade of brown, as well as a strikingly similar profile. He strode toward them with an arrogance that made Ville want to choke him. “Your mother sent for me.”
The man scowled at Helen. “And since when do you have the right—”
He never finished his sentence, Helen’s hand coming across his face so hard blood squirted from his nose. She took him by the throat, just as Ville had imagined himself doing.
“Speak to me like that again, and I’ll make you regret it, Sean.” She threw him to the ground. “I’m amazed you have the audacity to face me, you coward. You stood and watched him kill her, yet you did nothing! You’d better leave before Andrew gets down here. You already have to answer to Jareth and Julianna.”
Sean rose slowly. “She had demon spawn in her womb. Father acted rightly.”
Helen’s hand came out again, only this time, her nails extended like claws, pointing to shifter blood somewhere in her line. She slashed Sean’s shirt and ripped her nails across his chest, just above his heart. Some around them gasped, yet no one did anything.
Her voice low and menacing, she said, “I should’ve done this yesterday.” She straightened her spine. “You’re no longer my son. No longer welcome here in my castle.
